Best of the Rest (Weekly Links Ending 6/5/11)

by Tony

Seven months and counting until we start our grand RTW adventure and in order to prepare, we read every travel article we can find.  Below are some of our favorite links from the past week, but if you have an article you think deserves to be on the weekly list make sure to post it in the comments!

  • We were at a fantastic wedding last weekend in Minnesota that happened to be loaded with world travelers.  One conversation about the longest bus trip taken abroad stood out… some said 20 hours, others 24, but the winner by far was the best man who took a 50 hour bus ride while in Argentina.  50 HOURS!  Hopefully he was able to use some of these great travel-boredom tips to pass the time.
  • Some great safety tips to remember while on the road by Ayngelina of Bacon Is Magic (courtesy Nomadic Matt).
  • I made a note when Uncornered Market mentioned this little hidden resort in Koh Samui, Thailand.  Now that Michael from the Art of Backpacking has raved about it as well… it has been added to our must-do list!  Looks beautiful in the pictures and only $20 (USD) per night?  Amazing!
  • Gotta disagree Mike… the Hemingway House in Key West is not cool.  More like crazy disturbing with close to a hundred 26-toed cats and displays featuring the artwork of Hemingway’s great-grandchildren (let me spare you the expense… they ain’t worth the $12.50 entrance fee).
  • I like meat as much as the next guy, but being able to find a good vegetarian meal while on the road will be key.  Lauren writing on BackpackingMatt.com provides some great tips on how to eat your veggies while on the road.
  • Brooke takes time to write about one of my favorite theme restaurants in one of my favorite cities: The Garlicky Rose in San Francisco.  Bonus tip from LandingStanding… across the street is a little restaurant called The House. Amazing Asian fusion cuisine tucked into the Italian neighborhood of North Beach.
  • Nomadic Matt writes about one of the goals of our RTW trip which is to find life-long friends in every corner of the world.

If you read any articles from the past week that you feel deserve to be shared, let us know.  We will add any great recommendations to next weeks edition and are always looking for new blogs to follow.
