Best of the Rest (Weekly Links Ending 7/17/11)

by Tony

A little later than normal on this Monday’s “Best of the Rest,” but we still have a great lineup of posts from some of our favorite travel writers. Keep up the great recommendations on Twitter as we love seeing what you all are reading!

  • YTravelBlog puts together a great rundown of some of their favorite blogs separated into categories. If you are curious about the world travel community, lists like this are the place to start. Follow these writers on Twitter and sign up for their feeds on Google Reader to begin to immerse yourself in their lifestyle. By surrounding yourself with so many people following their dreams, it will seem that much more possible to follow your own.
  • Is backpacker burnout a real thing? I see many travel writers discuss it, but it is hard to imagine while sitting on my couch and dreaming of the world. Anyone else have suggestions on how to avoid it?
  • Newsflash: Meg and I are crushing hard on Chile at the moment. For the time being, any post on Chile is going to make our weekly rundowns… especially when it involves a sweet road trip through desert and down the coast.
  • Tripbase.com has a cool campaign where they are asking travel bloggers to link to their own 7 favorite articles in different categories. Once they have linked to their own seven articles, they are supposed to nominate 5 other bloggers to do the same. Such a great way to catch up on some of the great travel blogs out there. My favorite 7 links so far? BackpackingMatt.
  • As Meg might say: “We love, love!” A practical, yet romantic, tale of engagement and honeymoon planning over at Twenty-Something Travel. And in a bit of self-promotion… if you liked this, you will most certainly like Meg’s great write-ups on our wedding, honeymoon, and how to save for them both!
  • All day and every day. That is I could read articles like “The One Thing You Can’t Live Without” every day until we leave for our big trip. So many surprising items I never would have thought about bringing, but all so crucial on a long trip. My vote for the one item I think I couldn’t live without would be my Kindle… but I’ll just have to wait to find out!
  • Some great ways to save money on accommodation while on the road. We can’t wait to try WWOOFing, but Meg has a ways to go until I convince her to try couchsurfing. Anyone have good luck with either of them?
  • If you’re stuck in that procrastinating funk, read this inspirational post from The Practical Nerd. Get off your butt and try challenging yourself. Surprise yourself! Also, the lead quote in the article gives me a great excuse to end on Meg’s favorite saying… That’s what she said!
